These days, it’s not enough to have a web site that can be viewed only on a desktop computer. Increasingly, devices used to access the internet are becoming smaller, and consequently, screen sizes are shrinking too. This is good news if you need to use the internet whilst you are out and about, but bad news for traditional web sites that simply do not scale well to small devices.

Most people, when faced with the need to  manoeuver a tiny window over a large web page will give up after a few seconds if they haven’t found what they are looking for. The best modern web sites implement a  ‘responsive’ design which adjusts itself to the screen on which it is being viewed.

If you are viewing this page on a smart phone or tablet, you can already see the advantages of responsive design, but if not, you can see for yourself by making this browser window smaller: Notice how the page gets narrower and longer without the need for a horizontal scroll bar. Responsive sites are far easier to use on smaller devices, and we believe that as portable device usage increases, they will become the norm within a very short time.
